PRESS RELEASE FOR IMMEDIATE DISTRIBUTION
“Entrepreneurs in Miami lead by the Minority Chamber of Commerce and good faith organization, Cuba Links Ministries to help victims of Hurricane Ike in Cuba"
Miami, Florida, October 15, 2008
Miami, Florida, October 15, 2008
The Minority Chamber of Commerce in Miami, together with others non-profit organizations, Cuba Links, and Evangelical Christian churches in south Florida have joined in a humanitarian effort to assist Cuba, and has launched an appeal for help to support with financial assistance the humanitarian operation. The funds are urgently needed to allow the Cuban Evengalic Chrisian Churches to help 8,000 families over the next 2 months. Immediate needs include the provision of family kits, kitchen kits, mosquito nets, mattresses, sheet sets, towels and water filters, according to leaders recently arriving from Cuba with specialists on the ground.
Douglas Mayorga, Director of the Minority Chamber of Commerce said that the Evangelical Christian churches in Cuba have evaluated the damage caused by hurricane “Ike” and have concluded that the damages caused are beyond imaginable, very destructive. “The Mission of our good faith community organizations is that our actions would put cash in the pockets of Cubans who need support for repair their homes and put food on the table. Now there is a growing chorus of voices—in the faith community, on editorial boards, and increasingly in Miami—urging our nation’s leaders to act decisively and the Cuba Government in good conscience to help the Cuban people".
Mayorga said that due to the dire circumstances, a plan has been created whereby the aid is to be distributed to the victims directly. “We have seen measurable success and we are now ready to be in Cuba to address the needs of all persons with lack of support , aid is aid, no matter how much and no matter what the source. The USA and Cuba already work closely together in exchanging hurricane weather information. Sending and accepting aid should not pose a problem for either nation most particular in the Communist government of Cuba".
Cuba Link, a non-profit organization, headed by Rev. Pastor, Gustavo Abreira, said, “We will arrive in Cuba, with a strategized plan, where we will focus the distribution of our donations in the provinces of Pinar del Rio and Holguin. Once there, we will travel to different sites within the provinces to bring aid to the neighborhoods in accordance to what has been planned with the Evangelical Christian churches of those communities”, Moreover, he said,"The situation is very tense, people are exhausted".
The minority chamber of commerce, Cuba Link, and dozens of local Evangelical Christian churches have united in this humanitarian effort and have organized a chain-prayer so that these organizations be given the approval from the Cuban government to bring aid to those in need.
